How to Transition your Baby to a New Formula

0-12 Months

Step 1 and Step 2

  1. We recommend starting with the baby’s most active feeding time of the day, such as midday, to introduce the new formula. This timing increases the likelihood of a smooth transition, as babies are more receptive and alert. Gradually extend to other feedings, leaving the night feed as the final one to switch.
  2. Begin by replacing one feeding with the new formula. Monitor your baby’s comfort, especially their digestion and stool condition. If no adverse reactions are observed after 2-3 days, replace another feed with the new formula, step by step. Monitor for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, mucous or blood in stools, gas, unsettledness, changes in feed volumes and weight changes.
  3. If any signs of diarrhoea or discomfort occur, return to the previous stage of the transition. Once your baby is comfortable with the adjusted amount, proceed to the next step. The full transition should take around 2-4 weeks. If discomfort persists after stepping back, switch back to the original formula and consult a healthcare professional if needed. It's important to remember that each child transitions differently, and their individual needs should always be taken into consideration.

12 Months and older

Step 3 and Step 4

For toddlers over 1 year, who generally consume 1-2 feeds of Stage 3 or Stage 4 milk drinks daily, their digestive system is more developed. If your child drinks two serves per day, begin the transition with a daytime serve to allow for better monitoring. Start with the new milk drink in the morning, while keeping the familiar milk drink at night.

Observe your child's adjustment for 3-5 days. If they adapt well, you can transition fully to the new milk drinks. Remember, a gradual approach is essential.

Tips for a Successful Transition

  • Avoid switching formulas if your baby is unwell.
  • Wait for 7-10 days after any vaccinations before starting the transition.
  • If any allergic reactions occur, pause the transition and seek medical attention immediately.
  • Do not introduce new complementary foods during the transition period, but you may continue established ones.
  • If you have any concerns, please speak to your healthcare professional.

The Bellamy's Organic Transition Guide was compiled with the assistance of an accredited practising dietitian. The information in this document is general in nature and for informational purposes only. This document serves as a guide for navigating the transition process, however some children may transition at a different pace based on their individual needs. If your child is experiencing any adverse symptoms at any stage of the feeding transition or you are concerned about their health and well-being, seek medical advice immediately.
