Mindful Mums: Rachael Finch

For the endlessly optimistic and athletic mum-of-two, Rachael Finch, motherhood is a celebration of the mind, body, and spirit. Inspired by the passionate people in her life, and driven to constantly challenge herself, Rachael is embracing being a mother and growing her own activewear brand. Raising her daughter, Violet, and son, Dominic, to be strong and healthy is her highest priority and she says that information about their health and wellness is paramount. Mindful Mums is a Bellamy’s Organic series about inspiring Australian mothers who are redefining motherhood and learning through the challenges while keeping healthy. We caught up with Rachael to talk about her approach to family, the importance of health and food, and how a strong support system has allowed her to truly appreciate all aspects of being an entrepreneur while enjoying motherhood.

Describe yourself in three words?

Grateful. Positive. Organised.

How does your typical day begin?

I’m a big believer in morning routines and starting the day on a positive note in order for the rest of the day to flow nicely. The morning usually rolls out like this - cuddles in bed with the kiddies and Papa followed by a stretch and a 3-5 minute cold shower. We then go downstairs to walk our dog Simba to the park and come back to have our MCT coffee and make breaky for the kids.

You studied Health Coaching at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in New York - how has this study influenced your approach to health and well-being as a mother?

IIN are all about teaching bio-individuality, meaning that one person’s food may be another person’s poison and we should each listen to our own bodies needs. This has helped shape my approach to health, especially as a mum, because there is certainly no one size fits all when it comes to being a mum and taking care of kids. It’s more important than ever to tune into your own body and lifestyle to do what works for you.

Is preparing food an important part of bringing mindfulness to your day and how do you include your children in this daily ritual?

I love everything about food - preparing it, sharing it, and eating it. Violet and I love making our meals together in the kitchen, she especially loves adding ingredients to the blender for smoothies or helping mix protein balls in the bowl. I love that she sees how food is made from scratch and that meals can be made using healthy, wholesome ingredients.

You also travel a lot for work - how have you handled the change from travelling relatively carefree to now travelling with a family?

It’s definitely a lot more to think about but whenever I have the kids with me I am happier and ultimately more relaxed. Each stage is also so different during travel - depending on their needs of how active they are! I need to ensure I plan for food, playtime & sleep periods during travel and take the necessary equipment or items.

What role does a strong support system play in your day to day life?

I don’t think I could do what I do with my career and raising a family if I didn’t have the support of my family and friends close by. My husband Michael is like a second mum; I am so grateful for his energy and love as a Dad and every day is a balancing act in our house.

Best career advice you’ve ever been given?

Choose to do something that you would do for free. A passion, interest, something that makes you tick. Then turn it into your job.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned since the launch of your activewear line B.O.D by Finch?

The support team around you will not only help shape your work but also your own beliefs and values. It’s so important to work with a good team who share the same ideas values as you.
