FAQ

What is the difference between Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula?

The primary difference between our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula is the balance of milk proteins. Both formulas have whey and casein proteins but in different proportions.

Our Infant Formula is whey dominant with around 60% whey protein and 40% casein protein. Breast milk also has around 60% whey and 40% casein.  It is important that a baby who is formula fed from birth or under 6 months, starts with a whey dominant formula like our Infant Formula.

Our Follow-on Formula is casein dominant with around 55% casein protein and 45% whey protein. We change the balance because as casein is slower to digest than whey, it may keep baby feeling full a little longer.  Follow-on Formula is suitable for babies from 6 months to 12 months and may be more suitable for babies who are being weaned off breast-milk, or who are starting solid foods.

Is it correct that Infant Formula is suitable through until 12 months? Should I change to Follow-On Formula?

We have 2 formulas suitable to 12 months. Our Infant Formula is suitable from Birth though to 12 months; and our Follow-On Formula is suitable from 6 months to 12 months.

Both our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula are nutritionally balanced organic milk formulas; made from certified organic cow’s milk and essential vitamins and minerals.

Once your baby reaches 6 months you can change your formula to our Follow-on Formula or you can continue to use our Infant Formula. Both will provide all the nutrition requirements your baby needs however our Follow-on Formula may keep your baby feeling fuller for longer and better complement the introduction of solid foods. It may also be more suitable for babies over 6 months that are new to formula.

If your baby is satisfied with our Infant Formula and is over 6 months it is perfectly normal and safe to continue to use this up to 12 months.

We provide the two choices because each baby is different and mums and dads are best to make the decision on what is best for their baby.

Do you have docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or arachidonic acid (ARA) in your formula?

Currently we do not add DHA or ARA to our infant formulas. These ‘extra’ fatty acids in formula are often produced using a potential neurotoxin known as hexane, which makes them unsuitable for use in certified organic products.

The fats and oils in our formulas contain a balance of fatty acids and fatty acid precursors, which provide babies with all necessary fatty acids for healthy development, and allow babies to make DHA and ARA from the ingredients.

Whilst the additives Omega-3 fatty acid DHA and Omega-6 fatty acid ARA are marketed as promoting brain and eye development it has not been conclusively demonstrated in peer reviewed research that these extra additions to formula actually provide any real benefit in healthy babies.

Bellamy’s Organic offers only 100% certified organic products and we will not compromise the organic status of our formulas by including additives that cannot be approved under organic certification standards, and are derived from a harsh industrial extraction process.

Should I add flaxseed oil or omega into the formula?

You should never add any vitamin or mineral supplement to a baby formula unless under the strict supervision of your health professional or doctor. Both our Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula are nutritionally complete and will provide your baby with all the nutrition required for healthy development until they are about 12 months of age

Why don’t our products contain ingredients from China?

Just like Australian Mums and Dads, there are many Chinese parents that use our products because they’re certified organic and made in Australia, furthermore our Chinese customers find it important that our products are classified as 100% imported into China. So we don’t include any ingredients from China in our products.

Where is your Palm Oil sourced?

We only use certified organic palm oil from sustainable sources in our infant formulas.  Our palm oil is from South America and is from the only company in the world that has a vertically integrated palm oil production system from seeder to farming, harvesting, mechanical pressing, and physical refinery and finally making of products including the palm oil. The palm tree plantation is committed to improve the living conditions of the local communities and is sponsoring the development of an additional 2,000 hectares owned by cooperatives of small farmers. This is important project of great social impact in the region and part of their commitment to organic farming practices.

We use palm oil in our infant formulas, which help to provide the correct fatty acid composition.  Palm Oil is used to supply palmitic acid.  Palmitic acid is a fatty acid which occurs in significant levels in breast milk and palm oil is the best source for supplying this fatty acid to formula.

We choose palm oil over other oils, because of its high quality, health conscious food processors and it does not contain excessive amounts of trans-fats derived from hydrogenation like in animal fats.

Our palm oil is not sourced from Indonesian rainforest and does not have any impact on orang-utans.

Why do you use Soybean Oil and where is it sourced?

Fats and oils are required in infant formula as a concentrated source of energy that perform a number of important functions in baby's developing body including; carrying fat-soluble vitamins to tissues and organs, supplying essential fatty acids for growth and development, insulating and protecting vital organs, and producing healthy levels of cholesterol and hormones.  The combination of soybean oil, palm oil and sunflower oil in our infant formulas provide the correct balance of essential fatty acids in baby's diet.

Like all other oils of vegetable origin, soybean oil contains no cholesterol.  Soybean oil contains natural antioxidants, and does not contain much saturated fat.  Soybean oil is a very healthy food ingredient despite the bad publicity regarding fats and oils in general.  The concerns regarding soybean oil are particularly related to the hydrogenating of the oils, the use of solvents during extraction and a hot/chemical extraction process which changes the healthy “makeup” of the oils.

Bellamy’s Organic only uses a mechanical cold press processing to extract their oils.  The negative press about soybean generally refers to the entire bean and it’s many and varied uses in modern food production, and importantly, in diets with high amounts of processed foods.  It's also worth noting that soybean oil is one of the few non-fish sources of Omega-3s and contains Vitamin E; and our soybean oil is certified organic, and does not have any genetic modification.

Does your formula contain animal rennet?
Not directly. However, some of the milk components are obtained from specialty organic cheese manufacturing which in some cases may rely on animal sourced rennet from certified organic animal production.
Do your formulas contain all the nutrients my baby needs until 12 months?

All infant formulas in Australia must comply with a strict recipe as dictated by the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards (FSANZ) and must meet all the complete nutritional needs of babies for the first 12 or so months of their lives at least. Our formulas meet these standards and we pride ourselves in the quality of the products we create.

What is the size of the scoop in your formula?

The scoop size in our Infant Formula and our Follow-On Formula contains 8.8g of formula powder when levelled off properly.

The scoop size in Toddler Milk Drink contains 8.5g of formula powder when levelled off properly.

Although all the scoops are the same size, the weight amount in a scoop of Toddler Milk Drink differs to the Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula because the bulk density of the powder is different.

What is the plant source of inulin?

Bellamy's Organic Toddler Milk contains inulin.  Inulin is a ntural prebiotic fibre that promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut.  That good bacteria helps maintain a healthy digestive system.  The plant source of the inulin used in Bellamy's Organic Toddler Milk is certified organic chicory.

Do your tins contain Bisphenol A (BPA)?

My baby is constantly constipated, could it be your formula?

Any changes in diet can cause changes in stool movements; frequency, consistency and colour.  In Australia it is a requirement that all formulas are fortified with mineral iron for healthy growth and development of babies. The added iron can cause some stools to be green in colour and may cause some transient constipation, particularly when compared against stools from breastfed babies.

Babies go through amazing transitions in digestive function as they grow.  Their tummy’s can be affected by all sorts of things including sickness, teething, and different and new foods or drinks being introduced.  All in all however, you know your little one best so if you are worried, you should seek advice from your medical practitioner.

Do your products contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients?

All of the ingredients we use are GM free to comply with the requirements of being certified organic.  We also test our formula ingredients for the presence of any adventitious GM components.

What is the vegetable oil used?

The vegetable oil that we use in cooking our cereals and snacks is organic sunflower oil. The vegetable oils that we use in our formulas are organic palm oil, organic soybean oil and organic sunflower oil.

What is the herb that you use?

The herb that we use is rosemary.

Where does your milk come from?

We source our milk from cows that graze on certified organic dairy farms and we only source the highest quality certified organic milk ingredients from Australia and the world.

How are your cows fed and do they take supplements?

We source our milk from cows that are fed and managed according to certified organic principles.  This means that the cows must only be fed on certified organic feed and pasture that belongs to the certified organic farm.  Where mineral deficiencies occur in pasture, amendments must be made by correcting the soil, so that the cows maintain balanced nutrition via plant food, rather than direct supplements.
